Portable AC Without a Hose: What You’re Really Buying
A portable AC without a hose, one that lowers the room temperature without venting hot air outside, doesn’t exist. A real air conditioner moves heat from the room to the outside, and without a hose or an outdoor unit the heat stays in the room, plus the motor’s heat. What’s sold in Israel as a hoseless portable AC is almost always an evaporative air cooler: a fan with a water tank that lowers the temperature by a few degrees through evaporation, and adds humidity to the room.
On this page you’ll find a simple explanation of why that is, the conditions under which a cooler does help (dry air, a ventilated room, one person in front of the device), what the ice packs really do, which coolers are on sale now and at what price, and what to buy if you can’t install a wall-mounted AC. We didn’t test the devices ourselves: the data is based on Israeli store product pages in November 2026 and on well-known physical principles.
The short answer
Air conditioners, November 2026- Doesn’t exist: the heat must go outside
- An evaporative air cooler (water and ice packs)
- About 60–250 watts depending on model
- About ₪140–1,500
- In dry air and a room with an open window
- In humid air, like the coast in summer
- A real portable AC from about ₪900
Models worth checking
Picked on specs, Israeli importer warranty and shop prices in Israel in November 2026. We did not test them at home. Prices change, check before you buy.
Gold Line ATL-486
Portable air cooler, 5.5-liter tank, 60-watt motor, remote, timer up to 12 hours, ice pack slot
Why: The lowest price we saw, with power use of only 60 watts and a timer. Per the product page it’s recommended for hot, dry areas.
Watch out: A cooler, not an AC. No airflow figures, and it doesn’t say whether ice packs are included. One-year warranty.
Eco Euro ECFC-120
Desert air cooler, 6-liter tank, 2 freezer packs in the box, 3 speeds, 2 modes
Why: Per the product page, 2 freezer packs are included in the box, and the water tank is slightly larger than the ATL-486’s.
Watch out: No remote, no timer and no power figures. One-year warranty.
Midea AC200-W
Portable air cooler, 7-liter tank, 100 watts, touch panel and remote up to 5 meters
Why: A 3-year warranty from Hamilton, the official importer, per the product page, and a 7-liter tank.
Watch out: The page shows “temporarily out of stock”. At this price it’s already close to a real portable AC with a hose.
Venta Cyclone 12000
Large air cooler, 12,000 m³/h, 70-liter tank, 250 watts, wired remote, stated cooling area 35–80 m²
Why: High airflow and a large tank suited to long hours, at 250 watts per the product page.
Watch out: The stated area refers to a ventilated, dry space. The page shows “temporarily out of stock”, and the warranty period isn’t stated.
Tadiran Move Air 10NG
A real portable AC with a hose, 1 HP, 9,000 BTU cooling, rating A
Why: The real alternative to a cooler: it genuinely cools the room, venting the heat through a hose to the window. Official Tadiran importer warranty.
Watch out: It needs a window for the hose, and the product page has no noise figures. Check the specs with the seller.
Prices in Israel: Air conditioners
One person sitting in front of the device; a 5.5–6 liter tank, a feeling of a cool breeze, not cooling the room.
A ventilated room in a dry area; a tank of about 7 liters, a remote and an importer warranty, but still not an AC.
An industrial cooler for a balcony or workshop, or a portable AC with a hose that genuinely cools a room of up to about 12 m².

What to look at before buying
| What to check | What it is | Our recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| AC or cooler? | A real AC includes a compressor and refrigerant, and its output is listed in BTU. A cooler includes a water tank and a fan, and its output is listed in watts or cubic meters per hour. | If the product page has no BTU and no refrigerant, it’s a cooler. Don’t expect it to cool the room like an AC. |
| Humidity in your area | An evaporative cooler only cools when the air is dry. In humid air it mainly adds moisture. | In the Arava, the Negev and dry areas, a cooler can help. On the coast in summer, the effect is small. |
| Ventilation | A cooler needs fresh air. In a closed room, humidity rises and the cooling disappears. | Leave a window or door open. A portable AC, by contrast, needs a window only for the hose. |
| Water tank size | The tank determines how long the device runs without refilling. | For a room cooler, look for a tank of 7 liters or more. With a 5–6 liter tank you’ll need to refill often. |
| Cleaning and hygiene | Standing water in the tank and sponge filter can grow mold and odors. | Empty and dry the tank when the device isn’t in use, and clean the filter per the manufacturer’s instructions. |
| Warranty and importer | Even a cheap device needs an official importer warranty. | On the models we checked we saw warranties from one to 3 years. The Midea AC200-W, for example, comes with a 3-year warranty from Hamilton. |
Why is there no real air conditioner without a hose?
An air conditioner doesn’t produce cold. It moves heat from the room to the outside, so it must have an outlet to the outside: a hose, on a portable AC, or an outdoor unit, on a wall-mounted AC.
Here’s how it works: the refrigerant absorbs heat from the room’s air, and the compressor compresses it and releases the heat on the other side, at the condenser. In a wall unit, the condenser is in the outdoor unit. In a portable AC, the condenser is inside the device, and its hot air goes out through the hose. That’s why, per an article on ynet (a major Israeli news site), a portable AC can’t work without an opening for the hot air to escape.
What happens if you run a portable AC without connecting the hose? All the heat it draws from the room returns to the room, plus the heat the compressor and fan generate from electricity stays in the room. The result is a warmer room, not a cooler one. It’s the same principle that explains why a fridge with its door open doesn’t cool the kitchen.
So when someone sells you a “portable AC without a hose”, check the product page: is there a cooling figure in BTU? Is a refrigerant like R32 or R290 mentioned? If not, and the page says water tank, ice packs or “cooler”, it’s an evaporative air cooler.
Evaporative air coolers: how they work and when they help
A cooler passes air through a wet filter. The water evaporates, and the evaporation lowers the air temperature. How many degrees does it drop? That depends almost entirely on humidity.
The physical principle, per the English Wikipedia summary on evaporative coolers:
- Dry air: in an example from Las Vegas, at 42°C (108°F) and dry desert air, a good home cooler brings the air coming out of it down to about 22–23°C (72–73°F).
- Humid air: in an example from Tokyo, at 30°C (86°F) and 85% humidity, the cooler can only bring the air down to about 28°C (82°F), an almost meaningless drop.
- Ventilation: the cooler needs fresh air all the time. In a closed room, humidity rises and the cooling disappears. That’s why you run it with a window open.
What this means in Israel: in the Arava, Eilat and the Negev, on dry days, a large cooler can genuinely help, especially on a balcony, in a workshop or in an open space. On the coast, from Tel Aviv to Haifa, summer is humid, and the cooler will mainly give the feeling of a humid breeze. In Jerusalem and hilly areas it’s in between: on dry afternoons it helps a little, and on humid evenings less.
In any case, the cooler mainly affects whoever sits in front of the airflow, not the whole room.
What do the ice packs do?
Ice packs add a little cooling for a short time. The amount of cold in them is very small compared with an air conditioner, so they don’t turn a cooler into an AC.
A simple calculation: melting a kilogram of ice takes about 334 kilojoules, which is about 320 BTU in total. A 1 HP AC (Israeli stores size ACs in “horsepower”, where 1 HP ≈ 9,000 BTU/h) removes about 9,000 BTU from the room every hour. In other words, a kilo of ice is worth less than 4% of what a small AC does in one hour, and it runs out after a short time.
In addition, while freezing, the freezer releases into the kitchen the heat it removed from the ice packs, so in the home’s overall balance there’s no gain.
When are ice packs noticeable? When you sit right next to the device, in the first few minutes after putting them in. The Eco Euro ECFC-120 page states that 2 freezer containers are included in the box, and the Gold Line ATL-486 page mentions a slot for swapping ice packs. That’s useful for a desk, not for a room.
Cooler or portable AC with a hose: a comparison in numbers
A cooler is cheap and uses little electricity, but it lowers the temperature only in dry air and only for whoever’s in front of it. A portable AC with a hose costs more and uses more, but it cools the whole room even on the coast.
Per the product pages we checked:
- Electricity use: the Gold Line ATL-486 cooler uses 60 watts, the Midea AC200-W 100 watts and the Venta Cyclone 12000 250 watts. A 9,000 BTU portable AC uses several times that. For example, a 1 HP wall unit like the Electra Relax Inverter 140 draws about 850 watts at full cooling per the specs.
- Price: a cooler costs about ₪140–1,500. A real portable AC costs about ₪900–2,100, per our portable AC guide.
- Installation: a cooler needs no installation. A portable AC needs a window or opening for the hose, and sometimes a window sealing kit.
- Humidity: a cooler adds humidity. An AC removes humidity. In a damp home prone to mold, that’s an important difference.
- Water: you fill a cooler with water. With a portable AC you sometimes need to empty a condensate tank, and per Tornado high humidity increases the amount of condensation.
Bottom line: anyone who wants to cool a bedroom in Tel Aviv in August needs an AC, portable or wall-mounted. Anyone who wants a cool breeze at their desk in Mitzpe Ramon can make do with a cooler.
If you bought a cooler: how to get the most from it
A cooler works best when the air going into it is dry and has somewhere to escape. Used correctly it gives a cool breeze; used incorrectly it just adds humidity to the room.
Practical tips:
- An open window: per the Wikipedia summary, a cooler needs many air changes per hour to work. In a closed room, humidity rises and the cooling disappears.
- Placement: put the cooler near the window, with the airflow aimed at you. That way you get the dry outside air, cooled.
- Cold water: cold tap water, or ice packs in the first hour, add a bit of cooling. Evaporation does most of the work.
- Time of day: at midday, when the air is drier, the cooler works better than on a humid evening.
- Cleaning: empty the tank when the device isn’t in use, dry it and clean the sponge filter. Standing water grows mold and odors.
- Watch the humidity at home: if mold or damp appears on the walls, stop using the cooler in that room.
In winter, many coolers also work as a regular fan. They don’t heat. If you also need heating, a portable or wall-mounted AC with a heat pump is the solution.
Can’t install a wall-mounted AC? What you can do
In most cases there’s a solution that genuinely cools: a portable AC with a hose through a window, or a wall unit with a special installation. A cooler and a fan are an add-on, not a replacement.
The options by situation:
- Renters whose landlord won’t allow drilling: a portable AC with a hose going out through a sliding window, with a sealing kit. No drilling needed, and you can take it with you when you leave. Recommendations and models are in our portable AC guide.
- No room for an outdoor unit: sometimes it can be installed on the roof, in the laundry niche or on a bracket. Long piping makes installation more expensive: per pro.co.il (an Israeli contractors’ site) about ₪120–150 per extra meter. Details are in our AC installation cost guide.
- A room without a window: a portable AC won’t work without an outlet, and a cooler won’t work without ventilation. Here you need a wall unit or mini-central with piping from elsewhere.
- You only want the feel of a breeze: a ceiling fan uses tens of watts, moves air around the whole room and doesn’t add humidity. The comparison is in our ceiling fan guide.
If you bought a cooler anyway, use it correctly: cold tap water, an open window, sitting in front of the airflow. Empty and dry the tank when you’re not using it, to prevent odors and mold.
The bottom line
A real AC without a hose: Doesn’t exist: the heat must go outside. What’s actually sold: An evaporative air cooler (water and ice packs).

FAQ: portable AC without hose
Is there a portable AC that works without a hose?
Not a real AC. Every air conditioner needs to move heat outside, through a hose or an outdoor unit. Devices sold as a “portable AC without a hose” are evaporative air coolers, which cool a little only in dry air.
What’s the difference between an air cooler and an air conditioner?
An AC uses a compressor and refrigerant, moves heat outside and removes humidity. A cooler passes air through a wet filter, cools by evaporation and adds humidity. On the product page, an AC has a BTU figure, and a cooler has a water tank.
Does an air cooler work in Tel Aviv?
In summer the effect is small. An evaporative cooler works well in dry air, and on the coast humidity is high in summer. The cooler will mainly give a humid breeze to whoever sits in front of it, and won’t lower the room temperature.
How many degrees does an air cooler lower the temperature?
It depends on humidity. Per examples cited on Wikipedia, in 42°C desert air a good cooler puts out air of about 22–23°C. In 30°C air with 85% humidity, it only brings it down to about 28°C.
Do ice packs in a cooler cool the room?
Very little. A kilo of ice absorbs about 320 BTU as it melts, and a small 1 HP AC removes about 9,000 BTU per hour. Ice packs are only felt by someone sitting right next to the device, and for a short time.
How much electricity does an air cooler use?
On the models we checked: 60 watts on the Gold Line ATL-486, 100 watts on the Midea AC200-W and 250 watts on the Venta Cyclone 12000. That’s far less than an AC, but the cooling is also far smaller.
Which is better for a bedroom, a cooler or a portable AC?
In most of the country, a portable AC with a hose. It cools the room and removes humidity. A cooler adds humidity and needs an open window, and on a humid night on the coast you’ll barely feel it.
Can I run a portable AC without connecting the hose?
You can switch it on, but the room will get warmer. The heat the AC draws returns to the room along with the compressor’s heat. Without an outlet to the outside, a portable AC is a small heater.
How much does a real portable AC with a hose cost?
Per our portable AC guide, models from official importers cost about ₪900–2,100, depending on output. The 9,000 BTU Tadiran Move Air 10NG sells for about ₪900–1,000.
