Built-In Refrigerator: A Guide to Choosing and Installing One

Updated November 6, 2026. Written by Binyamin Elkalay. Compared on specs and Israeli shop prices, no lab testing.

Short answer: a standard built-in (integrated, "integrali") refrigerator about ⁦177 cm⁩ high and about ⁦54–⁦56 cm⁩⁩ wide gives ⁦220–270⁩ liters and costs about ₪⁦6,500–8,000⁩ (NIS) per store prices. A tall model of about ⁦193 cm⁩ and wide at about ⁦69–⁦70 cm⁩⁩ gives ⁦350–400⁩ liters and costs about ₪⁦7,700–17,000.⁩ You pay more per liter than for a regular fridge, in return for a uniform, quiet kitchen.

We did not test the fridges physically. The comparison is based on specs from product pages and the Siemens Israel website, and on prices we saw in Israeli stores in November 2026. With a built-in fridge the carpenter matters as much as the fridge: settle the niche dimensions and hinge type before ordering cabinets.

What to look at before buying

What to checkWhat it isOur recommendation
Niche heightBuilt-in fridges are built in two main heights: about ⁦177–⁦178 cm⁩⁩ and about ⁦193–⁦194 cm⁩⁩. The height determines the cabinet column's height.A product height of ⁦177.2–⁦177.5 cm⁩⁩ suits a standard column; ⁦193.5–⁦193.7 cm⁩⁩ suits a tall column. Check the exact niche dimensions in the model's installation manual before the carpenter starts.
Width and depthMost models are ⁦54–⁦56 cm⁩⁩ wide and fit a ⁦60 cm⁩ column. There are wide models of ⁦69–⁦71 cm⁩⁩ for a column of ⁦75 cm⁩ and up.Fridge depth is ⁦54.5–⁦55.1 cm⁩⁩ per product pages. Make sure the column leaves room for ventilation at the back or in the openings the manufacturer specifies.
Hinge typeA sliding hinge (Slider) connects the cabinet front to the fridge door on a rail; a fixed hinge (Flat hinge) connects them directly and the front moves together with the door.A fixed hinge is considered more stable and convenient and allows wide opening; a sliding hinge is simpler to install. Confirm with the carpenter which type you are ordering before they cut the front.
Capacity and splitA built-in fridge has less capacity than a freestanding fridge of the same width, because insulation and frame take up space. For a couple: ⁦220–270⁩ liters. For a family: ⁦300–400⁩ liters, or two columns: a fridge without a freezer and a built-in freezer next to it.
No FrostSome models are No Frost in both compartments, and some only in the freezer.Look for No Frost at least in the freezer. The Bauknecht BNF70IS400 and General GE71BINFR are shown as No Frost in both compartments per product pages.
Shabbat modeNot every built-in fridge has a Shabbat mode, even from brands that market one on other models. The Samsung BRB80F26CEF0 lists a mehadrin Shabbat mode on its product page; the Siemens KB96NADD0 has halachic certification per the Siemens site. On the other models we saw it was not mentioned.
Compressor warrantyImporters give one year on the whole fridge and an extension on the compressor only.Samsung: ⁦10–20⁩ years on the compressor per product pages; Bauknecht: 9 years for ₪199. Also ask who installs it and whether installation affects the warranty.

What is a built-in refrigerator and who is it for?

A built-in refrigerator is a fridge without its own front that goes inside a kitchen cabinet column and gets a door from the carpenter, so it looks like another cabinet; it suits anyone planning a new kitchen who prefers a uniform look over maximum capacity.

Per the Siemens Israel website, a built-in fridge has no doors of its own: the cabinet fronts attach to the fridge body. The site also notes that because the fridge sits inside the cabinets, it is quieter than a freestanding fridge and needs no gaps between it and the cabinets.

Advantages:

  • A uniform kitchen without a block of stainless steel or glass.
  • The fridge does not stick out from the cabinet line.
  • Better noise insulation, per Siemens.
  • You can combine two columns: a fridge without a freezer and a built-in freezer next to it.

Disadvantages:

  • Less capacity than a freestanding fridge of the same width: ⁦221–298⁩ liters in a standard column, vs ⁦340–460⁩ liters in a freestanding ⁦60 cm⁩ bottom freezer.
  • Higher price per liter.
  • Future replacement requires a model with the same niche dimensions and hinge type.
  • Dependence on the carpenter: incorrect installation harms ventilation and door closing.

If you want a fridge that looks built in but need more capacity, there is an in-between solution: a freestanding zero-clearance fridge (kav efes), like the Samsung RB35C6225, which lines up with ⁦70 cm⁩ deep cabinets. We compare all types in our best refrigerator guide.

When it is the right choice: when you are building a new kitchen or renovating all of it, when the kitchen is open to the living room and you want it to look like furniture, and when you are willing to pay more per liter for the look. When not: when the kitchen already exists and there is no budget for carpentry, when a large family needs 600 liters in one appliance, or when you rent and will have to take the fridge with you. A built-in fridge usually stays with the kitchen, so it is an investment in the apartment, not just the appliance.

Built-in fridge niche dimensions: 177 or ⁦193 cm⁩

First choose the fridge height, about 177 or about ⁦193 cm⁩, and its width, about 55 or about ⁦70 cm⁩, and give the carpenter the niche dimensions from the exact model's installation manual before they start.

Dimensions we saw on product pages and the Siemens site:

  • Siemens KI86FPDD0: 177.2 × 55.8 × ⁦54.5 cm⁩ (height × width × depth).
  • Siemens KI81FHDD0 (fridge without freezer) and GI81NACE0 (built-in freezer): 177.2 × ⁦55.8 cm⁩, per the Siemens site.
  • Samsung BRB80F26CEF0 and BRB266030WW: ⁦177.5 cm⁩ including hinge, ⁦54 cm⁩ wide, ⁦55 cm⁩ deep including handle.
  • Samsung BRB80F30AES0: ⁦193.5 cm⁩ including hinge, ⁦54 cm⁩ wide.
  • Bauknecht BNF70IS400: 193.5 × 69 × ⁦55.1 cm⁩.
  • General GE71BINFR: 193.7 × 69 × ⁦55 cm⁩.
  • Siemens KB96NADD0: 193.5 × ⁦70.8 cm⁩, per the Siemens site.

Fridge dimensions vs niche dimensions: the niche must be slightly larger than the fridge, so you can slide it in, level it and keep the ventilation openings. Most store pages do not state niche dimensions, so ask the importer or store for the model's installation manual, and give it to the carpenter.

Plan for the future: a fridge lasts ⁦10–15⁩ years. If you choose common niche dimensions, like a column of about ⁦178 cm⁩ for a width of about ⁦56 cm⁩, it will be easier to find a replacement model in a decade. A wide ⁦69–⁦71 cm⁩⁩ model gives more capacity, but the choice is smaller.

Ventilation: a fridge releases heat through the condenser. On a freestanding fridge the heat goes out the back and top; on a built-in fridge it goes out through defined openings, usually in the plinth (base) and the top of the column. If the carpenter closes these openings so the kitchen looks clean, the fridge will work harder, use more electricity and may break down. Ask the carpenter to show you where the ventilation openings are in the plan before production, and compare them with the manufacturer's instructions.

Floor and leveling: the fridge stands on the column floor, not on the cabinet. An uneven floor will cause the door and front not to close in line with the other cabinets. Make sure there are adjustable feet and that the installer levels it before attaching the front.

Replacing an old built-in fridge: if you already have a column and a built-in fridge that broke, measure the niche itself, not the old fridge, and check the existing hinge type. A new model of the same height but a different hinge type will require changing the front. In most cases a ⁦177 cm⁩ fridge will replace a ⁦177 cm⁩ fridge, but differences in depth and the position of ventilation openings may need a small adjustment by the carpenter.

Sliding hinge or fixed hinge: what is the difference

With a sliding hinge (Slider) the cabinet front is attached to the fridge door on a rail and slides along it when opening; with a fixed hinge (Flat hinge) the front is attached directly to the door and moves with it, which is considered more stable.

On the product pages we saw:

  • Samsung BRB266030WW and BRB80F30AES0: Slider-type door installation.
  • Samsung BRB80F26CEF0: reversible doors with regular hinges.
  • Siemens KB96NADD0 and KI81FHDD0: Flat hinge with soft close, per the Siemens site. Per an article on the Siemens site, the softClosing feature closes the door by itself when it is left open at an angle of 20 degrees or less.

What this means in practice:

  • With a fixed hinge the front and door move as one body, the door closes better, and fewer parts wear out. It is usually more expensive.
  • With a sliding hinge installation is more forgiving of small deviations in the cabinet, but over the years the rail can loosen, and the opening angle is more limited.

Opening direction: check which side the door opens and whether it can be reversed. Per the Siemens KI86FPDD0 product page, the hinge is on the right and reversing is a paid service. On a built-in fridge, such a change after installation is more complicated than on a regular fridge, so decide in advance.

Front weight: a heavy front, for example solid wood or glass, loads the hinge. Manufacturers specify a maximum front weight in the installation manual, and the carpenter needs to know it. Handles: on a built-in fridge the handle belongs to the cabinet front, not the fridge, so you can choose a handle matching the whole kitchen or push-to-open, provided the hinge and fridge support it.

Also ask whether the installation kit, i.e. the rails or hinges for the front, is included in the box or sold separately.

Capacity and freezer in a built-in fridge

A standard built-in fridge gives ⁦220–300⁩ liters with a ⁦65–75⁩ liter freezer, and for a family of 4 or more a wide model of about ⁦350–400⁩ liters or two separate columns for fridge and freezer is better.

The capacities we saw on product pages:

  • Siemens KI86FPDD0: 221 liters net (156 fridge, 65 freezer).
  • Samsung BRB266030WW: 264 liters (190 fridge, 74 freezer).
  • Samsung BRB80F26CEF0: 267 liters (193 fridge, 74 freezer).
  • Samsung BRB80F30AES0: 298 liters (224 fridge, 74 freezer).
  • General GE71BINFR: 341 liters net (257 fridge, 84 freezer).
  • Bauknecht BNF70IS400: 394 liters (295 fridge, 99 freezer).

Per an article on the Siemens Israel site, iQ700 series built-in fridges reach an average of about 500 liters net, i.e. in larger configurations.

The two-column solution: many kitchens today are planned with a column for a fridge without a freezer and next to it a column for a built-in freezer of the same height. Siemens, for example, offers per its site the KI81FHDD0 fridge and GI81NACE0 freezer with the same dimensions of 177.2 × ⁦55.8 cm⁩. That way you get a full-height fridge compartment and a large freezer, at the price of two appliances. If you need a big freezer without building another column, you can also put a freestanding freezer on the service balcony; see our best freezer guide.

Living with small capacity: in a ⁦220–270⁩ liter fridge, keep drinks and water in a second fridge or pantry, keep in the freezer only what you really need for a week or two, and organize shelves by height. A family that cooks for Shabbat and keeps large pots will feel the difference vs a 4-door fridge in the very first week, so decide on capacity by your habits, not by the dimensions left in the kitchen plan.

No Frost in a built-in fridge: on product pages, the Siemens KI86FPDD0, Samsung BRB80F26CEF0 and BRB80F30AES0 are shown as No Frost, the General GE71BINFR as Total No Frost and the Bauknecht BNF70IS400 as No Frost in both compartments. In a fridge inside a cabinet, manual defrosting is especially complicated, so No Frost matters even more here than in a freestanding fridge.

Shabbat mode in a built-in fridge

Only some built-in fridges list a Shabbat mode on the product page, so Shabbat observers need to choose a model where it is mentioned explicitly and get the halachic certification before the carpenter starts.

What we found:

  • Samsung BRB80F26CEF0: mehadrin Shabbat mode, activated by a 5-second press on the Fridge and Door alarm buttons, per the product page. The institute's name is not stated.
  • Samsung BRB266030WW: Shabbat mode activated the same way, per the product page.
  • Siemens KB96NADD0: per an article on the Siemens Israel site, the model received halachic certification for a Shabbat mode that disables lighting and sensors, and returns automatically to normal after 80 hours if not cancelled.
  • Siemens KI86FPDD0, General GE71BINFR, Bauknecht BNF70IS400, Samsung BRB80F30AES0: Shabbat mode is not mentioned on the product pages we saw.

With a built-in fridge there is another point: the buttons are usually inside the fridge, behind the cabinet front. That is actually convenient, since it is hard to press them by mistake. But if the fridge has no Shabbat mode, there is no simple way to add one after installation. Decide before ordering.

For more on Shabbat mode in fridges in general, and especially 4-door fridges, see our dedicated 4-door refrigerator guide.

What to ask the seller for: the name of the institute that certified the Shabbat mode for the exact model, a written explanation of how to activate and cancel it, and what happens with the fan, the interior light and the open-door alert. On a built-in fridge with soft close, also ask whether the closing mechanism is purely mechanical; per the description on the Siemens site, softClosing is a hinge mechanism.

Power use, warranty and importer

Built-in fridges use about ⁦185–⁦232 kWh⁩⁩ a year per product pages, less than a 4-door fridge, and most are marked D or E on the new energy label; check the warranty, including the question of who installs it.

Consumption per product pages:

  • Samsung BRB266030WW: ⁦185 kWh⁩, class D.
  • Bauknecht BNF70IS400: about ⁦205 kWh⁩, class D.
  • Siemens KI86FPDD0: ⁦213 kWh⁩, class D.
  • Samsung BRB80F30AES0: ⁦229 kWh⁩, class E.
  • Samsung BRB80F26CEF0: ⁦231 kWh⁩, class E.
  • General GE71BINFR: ⁦232 kWh⁩, class E.

Warranty:

  • Samsung: one year, plus 10 years on the compressor on the BRB80F26CEF0 and 20 years on the compressor on the BRB266030WW and BRB80F30AES0, per product pages, through Newpro of the Newpan group.
  • Siemens: BSH Israel. Per an article on the Siemens site, 10 years of compressor warranty (one year plus 9) subject to the warranty terms.
  • Bauknecht: one year, plus 9 years on the compressor for ₪199, per the Newpan certificate.
  • General: one year, through Hidur Mutzarim.

Installation: with a built-in fridge, installation is part of the product. Ask in advance whether delivery includes installation inside the cabinet, whether the store or importer sends an installer, and whether installation by a private carpenter affects the warranty. Also check delivery times: several of the models we saw were temporarily out of stock, and a kitchen waiting for a fridge delays the whole project.

Noise: per an article on the Siemens Israel site, a built-in fridge is better insulated for noise than a freestanding fridge, because it is enclosed inside the cabinet. In a kitchen open to the living room that is a real advantage. However, good insulation does not replace proper ventilation: a hot fridge is noisier either way.

Which built-in fridge to choose

For a standard ⁦177 cm⁩ column and Shabbat observers, choose the Samsung BRB80F26CEF0; if you prefer BSH, the Siemens KI86FPDD0; for large capacity on a reasonable budget, the General GE71BINFR; and for a premium kitchen, the Bauknecht BNF70IS400.

  • Couple or small family, standard column: a ⁦221–270⁩ liter fridge ⁦177 cm⁩ high.
  • Family of 4 or more: a wide ⁦341–394⁩ liter model ⁦193 cm⁩ high, or two columns: fridge and freezer.
  • Shabbat observers: only a model where Shabbat mode appears explicitly, and get the certification before ordering.
  • A renovation where easy future replacement matters: a standard niche of about 178 × ⁦56 cm⁩.

If the kitchen already exists: do not try to fit a built-in fridge into a freestanding fridge's niche without a carpenter. A built-in fridge needs a cabinet column with ventilation openings and a front. In an existing kitchen, a zero-clearance fridge or a 4-door fridge with a ⁦60 cm⁩ body depth will give a neat look without any work.

If you are equipping a new kitchen, see also our best dishwasher and best washing machine guides, and our Samsung vs LG refrigerator comparison.

Recommended timeline: choose the fridge model at the kitchen planning stage, before the carpenter draws the column. Get the installation manual, pass it to the carpenter, and confirm the dimensions again before production. Order the fridge so it arrives before the fronts are installed, not after the cabinets are ready and waiting. If the model you chose is out of stock, replace it only with a model with the same niche dimensions and hinge type.

Either way, before deciding it is worth looking at the broad comparison in our best refrigerator guide: sometimes a regular freestanding zero-clearance fridge solves the problem for less money and without carpentry.

The bottom line

Common height: about ⁦177 cm⁩ or about ⁦193 cm⁩. Width: ⁦54–⁦56 cm⁩⁩ (standard) / ⁦69–⁦71 cm⁩⁩ (wide).

FAQ: built-in refrigerator Israel

How much does a built-in fridge cost in Israel?

Per store prices in November 2026, a standard ⁦221–298⁩ liter built-in fridge costs about ₪⁦5,400–8,000,⁩ a wide model of about 340 liters about ₪⁦7,700–8,000,⁩ and a 394-liter premium model about ₪17,000. Carpentry and the front cost extra.

How tall is a built-in fridge?

There are two main heights: about ⁦177–⁦177.5 cm⁩⁩ (for example the Siemens KI86FPDD0 and Samsung BRB80F26CEF0) and about ⁦193.5–⁦193.7 cm⁩⁩ (for example the General GE71BINFR and Bauknecht BNF70IS400). Take the niche dimensions from the installation manual.

What is the difference between an integrated (integrali) fridge and a built-in fridge?

In everyday use they almost always mean the same thing: a fridge that goes inside a cabinet column and gets a front from the carpenter. Siemens, for example, calls these models built-in fridges on its site. A zero-clearance fridge (kav efes) is something else: a freestanding fridge that lines up with the cabinets.

Is there a built-in fridge with Shabbat mode?

Yes, but not on every model. Per product pages, the Samsung BRB80F26CEF0 and BRB266030WW have a Shabbat mode, and per the Siemens site the KB96NADD0 received halachic certification. On other models we saw it was not mentioned.

Can I put a regular fridge inside a cabinet?

It is not recommended. A freestanding fridge needs ventilation space around it, and enclosing it in a cabinet may make it work hard, use more electricity and break down. A built-in fridge is designed to ventilate through defined openings in the column.

Which is better, a sliding or a fixed hinge?

A fixed hinge (Flat hinge) attaches the front directly to the door, is considered more stable and is common on expensive models. A sliding hinge (Slider) is simpler and cheaper to install. What matters is that the carpenter knows in advance which type they are installing.

How many liters does a built-in fridge have?

In a standard ⁦54–⁦56 cm⁩⁩ wide column: ⁦221–298⁩ liters per product pages. In a wide ⁦69 cm⁩ model: ⁦341–394⁩ liters. Per Siemens, the iQ700 series averages about 500 liters net.

How much electricity does a built-in fridge use?

Per product pages, ⁦185–⁦232 kWh⁩⁩ a year, i.e. less than a 4-door fridge. The rating on the new energy label is D or E on most models.

Are a separate built-in fridge and freezer worth it?

For a family that needs more than about 300 liters, yes. Two columns, like the Siemens KI81FHDD0 and GI81NACE0 with the same 177.2 × ⁦55.8 cm⁩ dimensions, give a full fridge compartment and a large freezer. The price and space are doubled.

What warranty comes with a built-in fridge?

One year on the whole fridge, plus ⁦9–20⁩ years on the compressor only, depending on importer and model. On Samsung we saw 10 and 20 years on the compressor, and on Siemens 10 years per the manufacturer's site.
